Living Room Inspiration

1/14/16

Good morning!

Here's a quick update on our home renovation: it's become much bigger than originally planned.

If you remember my post from the beginning of November, I posted some before photos of our living room, and gave you a basic rundown of what I wanted for the room. Well, since opening those walls up and creating a mess, we've decided to completely re do the stair case

... and the upstairs hall

... and the two upstairs bedroom!

So, in conclusion, things have moved slower than planned because we've now taken on half our house at one time. Potlights have been placed and electrical redone, potlights have been run OUTSIDE too to the front of the house, insulation redone, and drywall is ALMOST done (the bedrooms upstairs need to be skimmed cause the walls are pretty wonky!) Here's a few quick photos:

The wall on the right was not drywalled, because we are going to be shiplapping it!

Unfortunately, I don't even have before photos of the bedrooms because it wasn't in the plan to do them for a few years! However we decided to just get it done and over with because, half our house will be complete after this, and it will avoid our living room becoming dusty and filthy when doing the bedrooms later on.

Anyways; in the mean time I've spent every day daydreaming and planning what I want for the living room. Since this is the first room we're doing, whatever style & decor I pick for it will really set the tone for the rest of the house. Late last night on one of my favourite Instagram accounts by Brittany York, I came across a photo that has every. single. thing. that I want in our living room. And has now become the inspiration for our home.

Every single thing about this photo. This dreamy living room has me swooning: the jute rug, slouchy comfy sofa, elegant chandelier, soft draperies, a painted door, and layers of creamy whites.

Here are some things that I've come up with that will help to achieve this look!

For my living room, I know I'm going to need a dark fabric sectional as our sofa & coffee table is the main dining area in this home! However, the sectional in the inspiration photo is the Ektorp in white. Even still, the great thing about the Ektorp collection is if something tragic does happen to your fabric - you can go buy a new slipcover for it. For lighting, we decided to put in pot lights for ambiance and have table lamps as our main source of light. With a sectional that is perfectly square, I recommend reflecting that shape in the coffee table by using a large square. Paint colours are 2040-70 Spring Mint for the door, CC-20 Decorators White for trims, and OC-117 Simply White for the walls. Layering a beigey-white drapery on top of Simply White creates that really smooth soft appearance for your elevations. And finally, the more throw blankets and toss pillows- the better.
