Essential oils are something that I've been interested in for a long time. However they do tend to be pricey and, of course, the easier thing to do is to purchase a $3 bottle of air freshener or household cleaner rather than making our own. But after spending hours of researching the benefits of essential oils, I finally committed to giving it a go with a simple air freshener. (Later on I will get into doing things like DIY cleaners, essential oils for first aid, natural illness remedies, etc). If you want to explore the world of essential oils a little bit, a website that I found extremely helpful was Edens Garden where you will find 101 uses for essential oils! Pretty cool stuff.
As I said, I'm starting small and simple. It's going to take a while to build up my oil library so my first purchase was lavender. I've had a lifelong love affair with anything/everything lavender, and I wanted to make it into a room spray that I could spritz on my sheets as I make the bed in the morning, on my clothes hanging in my wardrobe, on carpet, furniture, etc. Of course you can do this exact same recipe with whichever oil you choose!
- 1 Tablespoon vodka (vodka allows the oil + water to blend together)
- 6-9 tablespoons water
- 20-30 drops of essential oil of your choosing
- Add the vodka to your small spray bottle along with the desired amount of essential oil. Shake well, then add the water. Be sure to shake the bottle well before spritzing.
I'm so happy with the way it turned out. Of course if you want a stronger spray, you can always add in more drops of oil or vise versa (add more water for a softer scent). And if lavender isn't your thing, there are a ton of essential oil room spray recipes out there. I'd love to hear what you come up with!
