Cinnamon Roll Style

07/01/2015

They may not be the prettiest - but they ARE the yummiest.

I've been back & forth about posting this all day now because this post involves one of my favourite things that also involve one of the ugliest processes. IS it worth risking the appearance of my blog for a delicious recipe? My conclusion is yes because this one is w o r t h it.

If you have ever baked cinnamon rolls from scratch then you know a little thing about high expectations being crushed right in front of your very eyes. How other bloggers have achieved beautiful cinnamon rolls has GOT to be a hoax - I just don't believe it. Cinnamon rolls are the messiest, stickiest, and most difficult thing that I have ever baked. I am a very experienced baker, and I've tried at least a dozen different cinnamon roll recipes, and have landed on my favourite one that I have made over and over again.. and they still come out ugly every single time. BUT they are dang delicious and that is what matters most to me [ & Tom who eats mostly all of them! ]

These cinnamon rolls involve an incredibly sticky dough that require a lot of patience & gentle fingers. They're filled with a wonderful amazing cinnamon filling - LOTS of it - and this makes the struggle worth it in the end!

A very sharp knife is incredibly necessary for some clean cuts! I was able to get exactly 12 rolls out this time but sometimes I have more and sometimes less. It depends on how well the dough is cooperating that day :)

This is how they look before entering the oven! Hideous! I try my best to reshape them into what they should look like. Hey - who cares if they're ugly. All that matters is that they make my tummy happy in the end.

The good news is that they come out of the oven looking like this. Finally, top them off with some icing while they're still warm so it melts and oozes right into the roll itself! These are served best when warm however we enjoy them for a few days after as well :)

No-Yeast Cinnamon Rolls
Ingredients:

Filling:
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup brown sugar
3 teaspoons cinnamon

Dough:
3 tablespoons sugar
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup milk
1 egg

Icing:
1 cup icing sugar
1 tablespoon milk

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F.
  2. Start by making the filling. Cream together 4tbsp of butter, cinnamon, and cinnamon in a small bowl. It should form a crumbly texture. Set aside while you make the dough.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together all dry ingredients. Slowly add in the butter, milk, and egg. I like to use my hands at this point - cuts mixing time in half!
  4. Once the dough has become sticky and soft, roll it out into a rectangle-like shape with about 1/4" thickness. Use a LOT of flour - I mean a LOT on the surface before rolling it out.
  5. Spread the filling out over the dough.
  6. Roll up the dough and cut the roll into 12 pieces. Place the pieces individually into a greased muffin pan.
  7. While they bake, combine the icing sugar and milk for the icing. Drizzle the rolls with icing while they are still warm and serve right away.

There you have it! My favourite cinnamon rolls. You can find the original recipe on food.com but it has been slightly altered to my own personal liking!

Happy baking, friends!
